FOLLOW FRIDAY: Interview w/Sean Lyles

I got a chance to catch up a talented man by the name of Sean Lyles and talk about the past, present, and future.

Me: How are you today Sean?

SL: Im alive and well about to close down shop(High Point)

Me:Cool, so where do you reside at the moment?

SL: I've lived all over the US from Albuquerque,NM to the DMV area to Atlanta but currently I rest my head in PHX, Arizona.

Me:Wow, how did all of that moving effect you growing up?

SL:I've always had new friends, been at new schools so that's caused me to keep to myself in a way and rely on myself, but in a bigger picture I'm thankful for that.

Me:Definetly

Me:So at what age did you find an intrest in photography and visual arts?

SL: I took photography in high school. I could run a dark room in 10th grade, but I ran with the homies who did other things and were into different shit so I didn't go 100 percent with it at the time and it wasn't a cheap hobby so it didn't stick. I picked up a digital SLR 3 years ago and its been crackin ever since. I think photography is like ridin' a bike. If you got an eye, it ain't goin nowhere.

Me: Word, who plays a significant role in you life as well as photography?

SL: My moms, the closest person to me in my life. I never had a father figure around and I look up to her for being able to be a mother and a father to and do a good job at it. Photography isn't in my blood, I'm the first person in my family to shoot, my intrest in photos is what made me pick up the camera and my peers are my drive to keep goin'. It cliche` , but I try to keep winners around me.

Me: Like Wise

Me: So what brands have you worked with already?

SL: I've been blessed to shoot with Fresh Fiends, 5th Column, Dearly Departed, and Black Scale

Me: Sounds like a good start if you ask me, so I heard your quite the model as well.

SL:(laughs) I do a little somethin'. Haven't got that billboard yet, but its comin'.

Me: Haha, word. So, do you have a partner you shoot with or do you mainly stay to yourself?

SL: I usally shoot by myself. If I am shooting with someone its usally Lamar(@lamarlangston). We be on the same page when it comes to this photo shit. We have the same views on the game.

Me: What are those views? What is photography to you personally?

SL: Views on how "photographer" gets thrown around so loosley. Its hard to call yourself a photographer beacase its so saturated. Just like if some one tells you they're a rapper, you don't take them seriously at first. Thats ok because talent speaks for itself but, we believe in creating our own lane. Thats demaded and respected.

Me: Yea I totally understand that. So, what did you ultimately want to accomplish with your photography? What do you want people to see "Sean Lyles" as just by seeing your work?

SL: Photography is a representation of myself. I want people to see my work and be like "Yea, thats Sean Lyles". Photography doesn't need to make me rich, I enjoy shootin what "I" like. It doesn't have a deep meaning to me. Its something I like to do. Paid or not. If everything was perfect. I would like to get paid to document tours. I would like to go on tour with Maxwell. Or a band like The Rolling Stones or something crazy like that, you know?I would like my own studio with a nice seamless white wall.

Me: Congrats on your latest collab with Dearly Departed as well.

SL: Appeciate it, Slim and Rook are good people and have a good thing going on. I'm happy they wanted to involve me. I have a hoody design dropping in a moment as well.

Me: Awesome. Are there any personal projects your working on at the moment?

SL: Yea, Me and Lamar are working on the finishing touches on our book that will release in a couple months. I have a collab with Us Versus Them in the fall. Im working on a few clothing pieces, my man Geoff and Mr. with a hard back book in 2011.

Me: Awesome, Congrats. Whats something you live by day to day?

SL: I try to be respectful and stay humble. Always say thank you and count my blessings.

Me: Good words, are there any words you want to say to your friends, family, or fans?

SL: Family, friends, fans, homies, peers, colleagues. I love yall. I fuck with yall and im just getting started.

Me: Last but not least what does "JUST BE COOL." mean to you as an individual?

SL: JUST BE COOL. means doing what you have to do so you can do what you want to do and when you do it you help the next man do the same.

Me: Well thank you Sean for your time.

SL: Fasho
